Both terms are used interchangeably, however counselling usually refers to shorter term work involving specific issues. Psychotherapy on the other hand, is longer term, sometimes open-ended work involving more deeply rooted issues, some of which were established in childhood or the past.

This depends on you and your needs. If you come to therapy with a specific issue sometimes 4-6 sessions may be enough. For deeper rooted or longer standing problems or for clients presenting with several issues, longer term work may be necessary. It is always better to plan when therapy will end. However, if you decide you need to stop having therapy for whatever reason, please let me know so we can bring it to an end in a way that is right for you. It may be that there are other measures of support I can help you put in place.
